A loan can be classified as a non-performing asset when the borrower never repays it. It may result in the asset generating any income for the bank or lender because the borrower never pays the interest. During that case, the loan can be considered “in arrears.”

Sub-Classifications for Non-Performing Assets (NPAs):

A lender can offer the best period before classifying the asset as non-performing. Then the bank or lender can categorize the non-performing asset into the below-mentioned sub-categories:

Standard AssetsStandard assets have NPA assets past due for anywhere with an average risk level from 90 days to one year.

Sub-Standard Assets

Sub-standard assets have NPA assets that have been past due for more than one year. They have more risk levels combined with a borrower that is less than the ideal credit. Usually, banks assign the reduction in market value to non-performing assets since they are less sure that the borrower can repay the whole amount eventually.

Doubtful Debts

NPA assets in the doubtful debts category are past due for around 18 months. Banks have certain doubts that the borrower can repay the entire loan. This kind of NPA assets affects the own risk profile of the bank seriously.

Loss Assets

Loss assets are non-performing assets with an extended period of non-payment. Banks can accept that the loan is never repaid through this class and never record a loss on the balance sheet. The total amount of the loan can be written off entirely.
